Twenty Years of Catholic Campus Mission Work

September 19, 2008

OTTAWA- Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) is celebrating twenty years of campus mission work at Canadian universities. Since its humble beginnings at the University of Saskatchewan in 1988, the movement has since expanded to eight universities across Canada, employs over fifty missionary staff, and reaches out to hundreds of students each year.

CCO’s 20th anniversary year was launched with a weekend retreat that was held in four locations nationwide. This year the retreat included a sense of unity across the country as CCO’s co-founder André Regnier made an appearance and gave a talk at each of the student gatherings.

CCO also used the weekend as an opportunity to announce Saskatoon as the location of their next domestic summer mission project, IMPACT! Canada, to be held in 2009. Students were also introduced to CCO’s new logo, which seeks to more effectively communicate the heart of the movement.

Speaking on the journey the movement has taken over the past twenty years, Regnier said that the mission statement and goal of proclaiming Jesus has remained the same. However, many years of experience have resulted in a growing maturity and understanding of CCO’s original goals.

Since CCO began in 1988, Regnier has observed a great development in the missionary zeal among young people. “What I see is that there is growing number of young people who aren’t content with keeping their faith private. [They] want to see a revolution take place,” he said. The result has been a vibrant movement of students and staff who work everyday toward proclaiming Jesus on university campuses.

This anniversary year is a time to celebrate individual lives that have been changed through the inspired work of CCO. “We are in wonder and awe because we realize that this is not a great vision that any human came up with,” Regnier said. “This was God’s vision for the heart and the life of the Church in Canada. This is a celebration of what God has done.”

On October 18th, Foundation Day celebrations will be taking place in Vancouver, Saskatoon, Ottawa, and Halifax. All are welcome to attend this commemorative event. Details on locations and times can be found here.
